November 8, 2025

The School of Chinese Medicine (SCM), in collaboration with the Hong Kong Authentication Centre of Valuable Chinese Medicines, successfully hosted the 2025 Hong Kong Summit on Quality Control of Valuable Chinese Medicines at the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) on 8 November. The summit brought together over 100 professionals and scholars from the Chinese medicine industry and academia.

In her opening remarks, Professor Li Min, Dean of Chinese Medicine, pointed out that animal bezoar-based Chinese medicines have always been a valuable resource in traditional Chinese medicine, carrying historical significance while also offering new prospects for modern scientific exploration. She highlighted that ensuring their quality through scientific methods and advancing their application through innovative approaches are important challenges shared by both the academic community and the industry.

The Summit featured five insightful lectures, focusing on the history, origins, composition, and bioactivity of animal bezoar-based Chinese medicines.  Seasoned scholars and experts shared their experiences and insights on topics including metabolic diseases, cultivation of Calculus bovis, regulation of rare and precious medicinal materials, and the active components of goat bezoar. Attendees were engaged in meaningful discussions on critical issues such as the cultivation technology of Calculus bovis and the formation of goat bezoar.

Committed to fostering communication and collaboration between the industry and the academia, the School strives to advance the standardisation and internationalisation of traditional Chinese medicine and more importantly, to uphold the safety, efficacy and quality control of Chinese medicines, thus enhancing public confidence and awareness in the safety use of Chinese medicines.
